Major Systems
Traditional forced air furnaces and air conditioners are common ways of heating and cooling the home but there are actually some other options available. Hydronic forced air and radiant heat are more energy efficient ways of heating which use water to transfer heat. They can be used to combine home heating with water heating, increasing the energy efficiency even more. A programmable thermostat controls the amount of heating or cooling put out by these major systems, but a house with solid building basics (such as insulation and air sealing) won’t need as much heating and cooling. The thermostat can also control the ventilation of fresh air in the house if properly designed and installed.
Once the building basics are covered and the heating and cooling systems are optimized, energy needs will be greatly reduced and can often be covered in large part by renewable energy sources, such as solar photovoltaic and solar thermal hot water.
